Duckmanton Railway Cutting Nature ReserveOS Map: SK 423703
Duckmanton Railway Cutting Nature Reserve is a site of interest for its geology, it also contains grassland with some important flower species.
Location and access: Location: West of Arkwright Town, between Chesterfield and Bolsover
Access by permit available from the Trust office.
How to get there: The reserve crosses Deepsick Lane 1km south of the A632

The railway cutting which runs east to west is of international geological importance. The site is the international reference of the Clay Cross Marine band.
As well as revealing different rock types, including coal seams, shale, siltstones and sandstones, the reserve has a variety of fossils, including land and marine molluscs and plant fragments.
On the sides of the cutting, the vegetation varies from grassland to oak scrub and patches of mixed deciduous woodland.
The grassland flowers attract many species of butterfly, including small tortoiseshell, small heath, small copper, meadow brown, common blue and orangetip. The food plant of the orange tip, lady's smock, grows in the wetter ground. More than 40 bird species have been recorded on the reserve, including willow tit, willow warbler, yellowhammer and goldfinch.
