River DoveRiver DoveThe River Dove rises on the slopes of Axe Edge, close to the Leek to Buxton road and runs southwards for 45 miles to join the River Trent with for much of its course, running with one bank in Derbyshire and one in Staffordshire. It is a walker's river in that it is possible to walk down the first 20 miles of it's course. From Hartington to its confluence with the River Manifold at Ilam the river flows through scenic limestone vallies, known as Beresford Dale, Wolfscote Dale, Mill Dale and Dovedale. Much of the dale is in the ownership of the National Trust, being part of their South Peak Estate. Dovedale itsef was acquired in 1934, with successive properties being added until 1938, and Wolfscote Dale in 1948. The river is a famous 'trout stream'—Charles Cotton's Fishing House, which was the inspiration for Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler, stands in the woods by the river near Hartington.
