The Cork StoneThe Cork StoneThe Cork Stone, is a large lump of sandstone sticking vertically up out of the ground, to a height of over 5 metres, on the southern end of Stanton Moor in the Derbyshire Peak District. The moor itself is littered with the remains of the neolithic and bronze ages, and it may be possible that the existence of the Cork Stone added to the peoples' perception of the moor being a 'significant' place, chosen by them for ritual and burial use. It can be seen that the top of the stone is now wider than the bottom, as it has been eroded by the wind over many years. The proximity of the Cork Stone to the circles on Stanton Moor is mirrored in the proximity of the Oundel Stone to Doll Tor, a lovely circle nearby, and the placing of the circle called Nine Stones Close in the shadow of Robin Hood's Stride. The Cork Stone has been fitted with iron hand holds by someone back in antiquity, so it may be climbed with a little scrabbling. SK245628 Weather Forecast
