Mother Cap

Mother Cap

One of the Peak District's most distinctive outcrops, Mother Cap can be seen for miles around. From Froggat Edge and White Edge to the south and Stanage Edge to the north, it stand out on the back of Over Owler Tor.

Theories suggest that much of the prehistoric activity in the surrounding hills, may have used Mother Cap as a marker. And for this purpose, it could possibly have been illuminated by fire at night.

How to get there: From Surprise View Car Park on the A6187 Sheffield to Hathersage road, go through the wooden gate and take the footpath up through the trees. Mother Cap is straight in front of you. You can't miss it! Alternatively, park at the back door to Higger Tor and follow the footpath across Hathersage Moor, past the sheepfold and over Winyard's Nick.
