St Mary and Barlock, NorburySt Mary and Barlock, NorburyThe Domesday survey records a church at Norbury. However, the building you see today dates from the 1300s.SS Mary and Barlok is one of the most significant churches to be found in Derbyshire, because of the outstanding quality of the stained glass in the chancel. This dates from 1305 and was restored by Holywell Glass in 2004. A burglar destroyed one of the lower panes to the left of the chancel. When local people locked him in the church to await the police, he escaped by smashing the window with a chair. These days, the glass is replaced with plain glass. Much of the original expense of the current church building was met by Nicholas Fitzherbert, who died in 1473. You will find his magnificent tomb in the chancel. The Fitzherbert family, unlike the FitzHerbert family, never conformed to Elizabeth I’s Religious Settlement and remained Catholic. As a result, their involvement with this church virtually ceased after 1558. This is another church with literary connections. Robert Evans, the father of George Eliot, was born in the parish and sang in the church choir. It is possible that he made the wooden altar in the north aisle.
