Air Crash Site

Air Crash Site

With over 50 recorded air crashes in the Dark Peak, below is an account of one that still survives to this day.

Boeing RB-29A 44-61999, known as "Overexposed", of the 16th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron, 91st Reconnaissance Group, 311th Air Division, Strategic Air Command, USAF, crashed at Higher Shelf Stones near Glossop 3rd November 1948.

"Overexposed" was on a routine flight from RAF Scampton to American AFB Burtonwood. It is thought the aircraft crashed whilst descending through cloud.

The site is well preserved with more to see than most - the remains of all four engines can be seen as well as the undercarriage legs, sections of wing and various other bits of twisted metal.

All thirteen crew were killed. They were:-
